Breathing Life Into Educational Learning with VR
The Future of Educational Learning with VR
Immersive experiences in schools continues to be a hot topic of interest for many educational institutions and technology vendors, even more so today with children required to be home schooled in the UK for the foreseeable future. Blended learning is a new way of educating children, with the science of pedagogy yet to be fully understood and immersive technology research still in very early days. The challenge is identifying the most viable and cost effective solutions that cater for different age groups, to bring educational learning to life. VR headsets may not suitable for some children, but there are other ways of using the same technology to stimulate creative thinking.
Back in December (pre-lockdown #3), I was invited to create a simple digital experience for a local primary school as part of Ancient Egypt Day to support the national curriculum.
The brief was 'Take the children to Ancient Egypt'. The experience needed to be engaging, fun and educational, but also an encouragement of a collaborative learning path within a virtual environment, introducing the children to using gamification as an educational tool.
Dynamo Kings oversaw the design and development from initial concept to final delivery of a VR game for the Oculus Quest 2 working in collaboration with VR Technologist, Lee Probert and the Creative Design Specialist Angelina Giro, who were both instrumental in helping me create the user experience.
VR headsets can be expensive, but by casting onto the schools' screen, it gave all of the children the experience of a first person view discovering Tutankhamun's tomb using one device. The burial chamber had hidden treasures with puzzles to solve, with the movement being controlled by myself and mirrored onto the screen so the children were able to shout out the answers together with their cohorts. The short video taken of the experience shows the fantastic reaction from the children (and staff). As you will hear in the video, the children had great fun and it created a positive way of reinforcing the previous terms learning.
The possibilities are endless with spatial visualisations, not just in education but across all industries.
I would love to show you how, by working in collaboration, we could develop a tailor made immersive experience for your business. We could even meet virtually If you have access to a VR headset, if not Zoom/Teams so you could still get a visual perspective of the capabilities of spatial visualisation in your industry and learn more about what Dynamo Kings can do for you.
